Korean Students¡¯ Attitudes Toward Nursing Home Care for the Elderly
Yoo Sung-Chon

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out whether Korean students would like to have nursing homes in Korea, and to investigate their attitudes toward putting their parents, relatives, or friends¡¯ or friends¡¯ parents in a nursing home. It also explores how the concept of nursing home currently practiced in the United States is perceived by Korean Nursing students and alumni of Ewha Nursing College. A survey questionnaire constructed by this author was given to 100 nursing alumni and nursing students at Ewha University and 22 non -nursing students at Yonsei University. Another open question survey constructed by this author was given to some students at Ewha University, after a lecture introducing the nursing home care in the United States to study by what aspects of the lecture the students were most impressed. The data were statistically analyzed using Chi-Square.

The major findings are that (1) the students in the survey unanimously agreed that Korea needs nursing homes, (2) the older group was more inclined to accept nursing home care for the elderly than the younger group, and (3) the majority of the students were not willing to send their own parents to a nursing home.
